Epidemiology monitors the "health of a community" by studying the distribution of disease and health-related problems. Epidemiology also provides disease surveillance and investigation to detect the source of disease, the transmission of disease and disorders or conditions that cause illness or death in a population afflicted with the disease in question. Epidemiology promotes communication with local health care providers, hospitals, emergency management officials, schools and other local, state and federal agencies thus providing early detection and resolution of an adverse health event emerging in a population.
