Procedure for Installation of a Private Water System

Step 1: The applicant completes a permit application for a private water system. The fee for this permit varies and could cost as much as $300, depending on well type. Approved water sources in Fulton County include drilled wells, shallow wells, ponds and holding tanks for hauled water.

Step 2:  If the water permit is for a shallow well or a pond, a variance request must be completed. The variance will go before the Board of Health for review. The Board of Health meets once a month, usually the first Monday of the month. Please note that for shallow well requests, if there are drilled wells located within 1/2 mile of the property, the Board will require a drilled well attempt. If the attempt results in a dry hole, then a variance will be granted for a shallow well. For a pond variance request, there is a special pond application packet that must be completed.

Step 3: Once the permit application has been filed, and any variance requests have been completed, a site evaluation must be done by the Health Department. During the site evaluation, the sanitarian will review the proposed location for the water system to ensure proper distances from any potential sources of contamination.

Step 4:  Once the permit has been issued, the water contractor may install the water system.

Step 5:  After the installation is complete, the homeowner must contact the Health Department to obtain a water sample to test for coliform bacteria. The private water system permit includes 2 water samples, so if the first sample contains bacteria, the homeowner must chlorinate the well and a second sample will be obtained.
