Private Water Systems Program

Private Water Systems are regulated by the Ohio Department of Health under Chapter 3701-28 of the Ohio Administrative Code and Sections 3701.344 to 3701.347 of the Ohio Revised Code. Private Water Systems are potable water wells, ponds, springs, cisterns and hauled water storage tanks that provide drinking water to fewer than 25 people, less than 25 people, less than sixty days out of the year, and have less than 15 service connections.

The Fulton County Health Department offers a variety of services in the Private Water Systems (PWS) program including:

  • PWS permits
  • PWS water sampling
  • Registration of Water Haulers
  • PWS contamination investigations
  • Inspections of individuals engaged in constructing water systems

The number of homes in Fulton County that have access to municipal water is on the increase. In 2003, city water was made available to the residents of Tedrow. An important, but sometimes forgotten, issue associated with municipal water line connections is proper private water system abandonment. Unused wells that are not properly sealed after homes have connected to a municipal water line can create numerous public health and safety concerns, along with serving as a potential contamination source to the aquifer.
