Sewage Treatment System Abandonment Procedures

1. Have a registered septage hauler (liquid waste hauler) pump the liquid, sludge and scum from all tanks, dosing tanks, and/or pretreatment components in the system. Click here for a list of registered haulers.

2. Remove any solid materials, such as filter media or other STS components, these shall be taken to an approved solid waste disposal facility or shall be managed in a manner that prevents a public health nuisance and contamination of surface or ground water.

3. Upon removal of the contents of the tank, dosing tank and/or pretreatment component, the top shall either be completely removed or shall be collapsed and at least one side collapsed to prevent containment of water in the abandoned tank or component. The resulting void shall be filled to the ground surface with inert and clean fill materials such as sand, gravel, or compacted soil in an amount and manner that allows for settling and prevents ponding of surface water.

Any person who abandons an STS system shall notify the Board of Health in writing that the STS has been properly abandoned. Provide the following information to the Fulton County Health Department, Environmental Division, 606 S. Shoop Avenue, Wauseon OH 43567:
