Household Sewage Treatment Systems

Household sewage treatment systems are regulated by the Ohio Department of Health under the Ohio Sanitary Code Chapter 3701-29. A household sewage treatment system is any sewage disposal or treatment system for a single family, two family, or three family dwelling which receives sewage.

The Fulton County Health Department's responsibilities of the Household Sewage Program include:

  • Permitting and inspecting the installation of new septic systems
  • Registration of sewage system installers and septic tank cleaners
  • Investigation of nuisances created by failing septic systems

Household sewage systems are relied upon to properly treat and dispose of wastewater in areas that are not accessible to a sanitary sewer. Many of the existing systems have been in use for decades and may not be capable of properly treating sewage prior to discharging an effluent to the environment. The Health Department is constantly working to abate any sewage nuisances which may pose potential health and safety concerns to our citizens and pollution of the waters of the state.
